A detailed check of the fetal anatomy can be carried out at this gestation, looking carefully at the brain, face, spine, heart, kidneys, bowel and limbs. 90% of abnormalities will be detected, ranging from major life threatening conditions to more minor correctable conditions such as a cleft lip or club foot.
We have another opportunity to look for subtle signs or "markers" that may be present in fetuses with a chromosomal abnormality, such as Down Syndrome.
Measurements will be taken of the head, abdomen and long bones to check that the fetus is growing normally and in proportion.
The placental site will be checked to ensure that it does not cover the cervix. If it is a little low at this stage, a scan will be recommended at 36 weeks.
Please note that should the fetus be in an awkward position, a second scan may be necessary in order to complete the examination.
